I introduced Twitter in my large-lecture classes to encourage students to participate by engaging with class topics and applying the theories to real world examples. In Fashion Concepts and Theory, Twitter is a course requirement. Each week, the sstudents share their views on fashion industry debates or examples of concepts from class on Twitter. I start each class by introducing some of the tweets from the past week and asking questions about them.

I also create an activity for each class that is based on Twitter. For each activity, students first share their responses on Twitter. I then show all the tweets on the overhead screen and we discuss them as a class. For one activity, students take and tweet an honest selfie to challenge objectification and the gaze. Since using Twitter in the classroom is new, I have conducted research to explore its effectiveness. Below is an article that I co-wrote on how using Twitter in large-lecture courses increases student engagement and success:

This study incorporated social media microblogging technology (Twitter) across disciplines to provide 411 first-year undergraduate students studying in large-classroom settings with opportunities to connect in real-time, both within and outside the classroom, with their professor, other students, and members of the professional community. This extension to the traditional teaching and learning environment gave students unique opportunities to enhance their university experience, both from engagement, learning and community-connectedness perspectives. Based on student outcomes and lessons learned, we provide educators with insights into the effective use of social media microblogging technology in a large classroom.
